Ignorance is never bliss

Recently, the municipality of Marihatag, in the province of Surigao del Sur, was shaken by a strong magnitude 5.9 earthquake early morning last Monday, November 16, 2020. As the Philippines is known to experience countless calamities every year, Earthquake, one of the most disparaging disasters that the country commonly experiences, could strike suddenly, without any notice and can occur anytime, either day or night. As the tectonic plates around the country constantly move, there are 9 to 18 earthquakes recorded each day. Although, some of them are not that strong. Many have experienced the traumatizing effect of an earthquake. A strong magnitude could destroy infrastructures, buildings, highways, livelihood, and most definitely the lives of affected people.

Since this disastrous event happens arbitrarily, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council leads and encourages people to practice and participate in the Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill. This program of the government focuses on strengthening the mechanism for national and regional coordination. It also intends to intensify local communities’ earthquake preparedness and awareness. In this program, people ─ the students, workers in the government and private sectors, and residents throughout the country are expected to enact the “drop, cover and hold.” It seeks to inform and give awareness to the public against earthquakes.

The “drop, cover, and hold” practice is the most essential and very important in times of Earthquakes. This action protects and prevents us from getting harmed due to the major effects of an earthquake. Participating in these drills implemented by the NDRRMC will let us familiarize correct preparation and execution to lessen the rates of damages and worse, mortality. All these precautionary measures being taught to us aren’t worth ignoring. We must comply with these programs, whether it may be for Earthquake preparedness or for other calamities.
