Women's Rights = Human Rights

Prior to the women's rights movement, women once lived in a very abusive, violent, and hypercritical society - stuck with slavery, prejudice, sexism, misogyny, discrimination, and the list goes on. From birth, boys and girls are set to play certain roles and behave accordingly to how society expected them to behave. Females were often marginalized by these gender norms, where girls don't have the right to be educated, where women are disqualified to make their own choice and held up to express their own ideas, abilities, and potentials as an individual. They were treated as inferior to men and were deprived of rights.

By definition, women's rights are identified as the liberties and probabilities women have - the opportunities for women to be treated justly and equally granted legal rights as men. This has been what women have been fighting for persistently over the years. Accomplishing this gave women equal rights to education, enabling them to participate economically, socially, and politically. Now, women can become peacemakers, educators, counselors, leaders, and do what men can. We celebrate Women's Day annually every month of March. The purpose of this celebration is to recognize and uphold the great achievements and contributions of women to society; empowering women's worth, and their ability to have their own voice and choices.

However, partialities and discernments towards women still exist up to this date. "Kababae mong tao," "Porket babae ka na..." these types of comments are still rampant and considered as a typical criticism towards women which truly shows how we're still intolerant and narrow-minded. Discrimination against females will be cut off, inequalities between men and women will be eliminated if only we open our eyes and ears and understand that women are as valuable and as capable as men; that women's rights are human rights.

  1. I admire that you included how the roles of each gender developed towards a more equal environment. I agree that we are a step closer to attaining the equality we want, but there are still hindrances that we need to overcome. Your article is well written, and the ideas are nicely arranged. Have a pleasant day!
